NMR, Neutron Magnetic Resonance, is a research technique. Proteins are analysed on their structure and behaviour with the help of high frequency magnetic pulses. One of the fields that profit from the outcome of the tests is the HIV-research.
The new NMR-facilities require space for eight spectrometers (the high frequency magnet) a console and a control board. The magnets are very specific in their behaviour and requirements. They all create magnetic fields of various sizes, dependent on the frequency of the magnets. These fields are sensitive to movement, types of structure, types of installation and so on. Any irregularity within particular distance from the magnets disturbs the results of the test. On the other hand the magnetic radiation also affects people, computers, credit cards, pacemakers, etc..
The magnets determine the main part of the project. This is the core of the building. They determine structure and surface, installation, they direct program and equipment, and they essentially affect circulation.
The building is split up in two different kinds of spaces: specific spaces and non-specific spaces. Both spaces have a maximum possible flexibility. The specific spaces are changeable because of time bound technological progress; the flexible spaces (like offices and public area’s) can be changed in case of increase or decrease of the size of the department.
