The aim of West 8’s winning design competition entry for Governors Island’s future open space was to create a World Park with robust nature and the presence of primal natural elements; a landscape with the attitude of a National Park, the un-central park. Its context is not the setting of urbanity; its context is of nature, of water and of the ecology. The Island will provide places to relax, play sports and explore, amidst the historic monuments shaped by the rich history of Governors Island. And all with an incredible view of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of the city. Leaving the city, the contact with the water, watching back over your shoulder - the experience begins the moment you set off for Governors Island on the ferry. Spectacular views of the city emerge around you. The Island’s vertical landscape acts as a green echo to the skyline of Manhattan. Standing on the hill tops one will experience immaculate perspectives across the Upper New York Bay. The hills can be programmed within: all kinds of (water) experiences, exhibits, health spas, caves for spelunking etc. These unique experiences make the Island a special place - an oasis yet to be discovered. The Southern part of Governors Island consists of wet marshes for ecological, recreational and didactic uses. This will be a unique habitat for wetland flora and fauna. Free wooden bicycles will be available to ride around the many looping tracks and paths. The characteristic path system connects to the Great Promenade and perimeter of the Island. An organic grid of pathways creates smaller spaces that can function from the simple meadow to potential future building plots. In the North Island and National Monuments district, existing buildings can be re-programmed and used for spas, university and educational functions and culinary/ haute cuisine. The Summer Park and the terraces in front of Liggett Hall will offer a variety of seasonal botanical park experiences and leisure facilities. The creation of the World Park will be a long-term process. In the future it is envisioned that intensive vaporetto traffic to the Island will be in place. Over time a collection of distinctive and interesting programs will make the island a necessary destination to return to. |
