| The mumok after rebuilding and renovation |
|
|
|
 The mumok is reopening after alterations: along with the necessary renovations to the terrazzo floor, architectural changes were carried out in order to ensure more functionality for the work of the museum. The heart of these is represented by the new cinema designed by Heimo Zobernig and Michael Wallraff. Integrating artists into the planning of the alterations was one of mumok director Karola Kraus's central concerns. |

 The new mumok cinema was planned and realized by Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig (*1958 in Mauthen/Carinthia) together with architect Michael Wallraff. A multifunctional room was created on Level 3 that is not only intended for use as a cinema, but is also a stage for dance, music and performance events. Priority here will be given to showing the extensive mumok film collection as well as curated programmes. The mumok cinema provides seating for 110 people and has an adjoining catering area. The large screen has been specially made and can be adjusted from 12 to 21m2 depending on the width of the film format being shown. The professional projection room has been provided with 35mm an 16mm projectors along with the most up-to-date digital technology. Dolby Surround Sound completes the mumok cinema. |

 The museum foyer has been given a clearer structure so as to be more visitor-friendly: the new museum café has been relocated on the level above the shop and is now visible from the foyer (which was previously not the case). This is a gain in appeal. A new additional entrance situation makes evening opening possible even when the museum itself is closed. Cindy Sherman (*1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) designed the wallpaper for one of the café's central walls, the ceiling light was designed by Joseph Zehrer (*1954 in Perbing) and the cloakroom and standing lamps are by Franz West (*1947 in Vienna). |

| The new museum café will be run by the two restauranteurs Aurelio Nitsche and Andreas Sael. They are relying on a youthful, modern café concept that also offers a high quality “take away”. Fresh, light meals will be served in the café which seats up to seventy people and, in addition, visitors can expect a fine selection of hot and cold sandwiches. Home-made cakes and deserts, creative interpretations of traditional pastries, round off the menu. |

| The auditorium on Level -2, which till now has only been used for events, has been adapted for exhibitions, providing an added 245m2 of usable space. Redefining the room now allows for its much more flexible use as an appropriate space for showing archive projects or the work of younger artists. |

| The large, 370m2 room in the oval tract of the MuseumsQuartier is part of the former imperial stables and will be used by the mumok as a multifunctional event room. The marble troughs on the walls and rounded vault ceiling is characteristic for the ground-level, slightly curved space. During the extensive renovations Austrian artist Otto Zitko (*1959 in Linz) was invited to realize a large scale painting on the ceiling. His entwined lines dissolve the space and redefine it. The German conceptual artist Joseph Zehrer could be won over for the design of the lamps. |

| Renovation of the terrazzo floor |

|
|
| After more that ten years of use, various renovation work had become necessary in the museum. For this reason the terrazzo floors on all levels of the museum underwent a thorough renovation, work that involved 5.000 m2 of floor area. Damage such as cracks and fissures that had appeared since the building was opened in the MuseumsQuartier were restored and the floors smoothed and polished. |

| As part of the CI/CD re-launch, the logo has been redesigned by artist Florian Pumhösl (*1971 in Vienna). The redesign of the remaining elements of the new corporate design was undertaken by Büro Martha Stutteregger. |
