DESCRIPTION

.
It was inaugurated on September 13, 1931 with a match between Fiorentina and Admira Vienna, resulting in a 1 to 0 win for the former.
In the course of 1930 and 1931, the stands and the roofing of the grandstand were built, the spiral stairs and the Maratona tower in 1932.
Before the World Football Championship of 1990, the installation was modified on a project by architects Italo Gamberini, Loris G. Macci, Enrico Novelli and Giovanna Slocovich. The playing field was lowered and new stands were built in place of the track and field events track, which was eliminated; the grandstand roofing was enlarged, and new external staircases were erected, along with a new luminous scoreboard.
At the time of its construction, the stadium was named after Giovanni Francesco Berta; with the fall of Fascism, the stadium remained without a name until 1991, when it was named after Artemio Franchi.
