Het Schip, finished in 1921, is the most renowned work of Amsterdam School architect Michel de Klerk. Above all Het Schip serves as piece the resistance of the social housing: it is a 'palace for the working class'. Extraordinary as well is the fact that the building block, originally assigned for by social housing coorporation Eigen Haard, is still in possession of that same housing coorporation. For this reason it still serves the same purpose as it was once built for. Michel de Klerk the architect was also assigned to incorporate a post office in the building block. Today the interior of the post office is the only complete interior by Michel de Klerk which can be visited. The special location of the post office is where the museum opened in 2001. Museum Het Schip is located in the building block which populary has gotten the nickname 'Het Schip' (The Ship). |
