The project won the competition by invitation, promoted by François Mitterrand and announced on July 14, 1988. Participants numbered 244 architects, 139 of whom were foreigners. In 1989, the jury headed by Ieoh Ming Pei selected four projects to propose to the President of the Republic: Dominique Perrault, Jan Kaplicky (Future Systems), James Stirling and Philippe Chaix, and Jean-Luc Morel; honourable mention for Rem Koolhaas and Jean Nouvel.
Mitterrand and the jury unanimously chose the project by Dominque Perrault, four towers in the shape of an open book with a suspended square in the middle, as big as the Place de la Concorde. |
