This project is the response to the competition held by the European Commission in 1993 for the renovation of the JRC (Joint Research Centre) in Ispra. MCA together with Ove Arup & Partners was awarded the design of four buildings, of which number 8 housing the kitchen and canteens – is the first to be completed. The theme and objectives of the competition was to find innovative architectural and energy solutions, the cost of which would be offset by energy savings over a maximum period of 15 years. The design stage concentrated on a study of the building and strategies for making optimum use of natural light and ventilation, bearing in mind the constraints of the existing buildings. The main intervention consisted in creating a vast shading roof (5,000 m2) to cover the numerous buildings that developed haphazardly during the 1960s (collectively 2,500 m2).

|
The roof, made from laminated timber louvers, gives shelter from strong sunlight and thus from excessive heating of the buildings in summer (reducing the need for mechanical cooling). It acts as a climatic moderator by creating different degrees of shade to the various pavilions below, and at the same time functions as a support for solar panels that heat water for use in the kitchens. Designed so as to respect existing trees and vegetation, the roof creates a connection between the building and its landscape, giving an appearance of unity to the whole. The new façades use low-emmisivity glazing and thermal-break frames, while the addition of chimney-like skylights (with mirrored inner surfaces) optimises natural lighting of interiors. The skylights also contribute to natural ventilation, eliminating the need for air-conditioning in summer.
