Description |

The new Ferry Terminal and Harbour Offices building in Otranto forms part of a wider project for the renovation of this town in the Apulia region. It envisages the upgrading of the eastern area where the building is located and the creation of spacious pedestrian square that connects the harbour area to the historic city core. The project is part of the European funding programme Interreg II Italy - Greece, which aims to strengthen and improve communications between these two European Union member states. The building is situated in an outstanding historic and scenic context. It is set against a rocky spur that slopes down towards the quays, and prolongs seawards the line of the 16th Century fortifications designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Measuring approximately 90x16 m, the building is orientated south-west - north-east, and consists of two storeys destined for use as office space and reception space for the public. The structure is of reinforced concrete, entirely faced with hand-cut sawn Lecce stone so as to obtain a rough finish (as opposed to diamond cut which would have given a smooth surface). The stone, extracted from varying depths of the same quarry, varies slightly in colour creating a play of tone and shade that is enhanced by the sun’s rays. The north-east and north-west façades are inclined by 8° and 16° respectively, a distinctive feature which finishes the building with a point reaching out to sea. The inclination contributes to the effect of light and shade and protects the interior from the strong summer sunlight reflecting off the water in the harbour. On the north-western side are secondary entrances, set back from the line of the building and not perpendicular so as to make them almost invisible when the building is viewed from the front. Next to the main entrance, which leads into a spacious hall that is lit by the sloping glass roof above, is a flight of steps leading to the roof of the building. From here a cantilevered roof with a galvanised steel frame and perforated sheet metal shading louvers protects a public space below. The rear area of the public square is paved in Soleto stone, while the paving of the quays and the connecting spaces is in Apricena stone. The choice of these particular stones ensures a sense of continuity with the historic core of the town and the addition of vegetation and herbs typical of the Mediterranean connect the complex to surrounding landscape.
