The building was built for the "Italia 61" exhibition, organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Unification of Italy in an area whose masterplan was developed by Nello Renacco. On the occasion of the 2006 Winter Olympics the building was restructured under the project of Gae Aulenti. From the original building only the sailing coverage has remained, under which it was built a new sports hall.
